Poetry Tour of India

Although the dates have still to be finalised, by invitation I am hoping to tour parts India with the celebrated poet Dr Charles Fishman, Distinguished Service Professor (Emeritus) New York State University. The planned tour is currently proposed for early 2009 (January/February). Will post more once confirmed.

Golden grape-vine

Gold grapes trapped within your mouth,

sweet smells of childhood summer

on your fingers.

The narrow place between market benches.

Scents in the air...

With eyes closed I can see

spots of sweat on your t-shirt,

in the basket

onions between spices

tied with white strings,

five tomatoes, garlic, dill,

parsley and thyme...

carrots, only two.

In the pot, chicken soup.

Two of us

connected like Lady and the Tramp

with

the hardness of man heart

comes sadning the tired eyes

reminding us that "Christ" is living

Breathe calmly, your heart at peace,

feel this book underneath your hand

and imagine the smell of dry, old paper,

allow all of your senses to feel it.

Remember the moment.

One day it will be

the old book with slightly worn-out corners

titled with my name.

Touch it slowly, open it,

inhale the love waiting there for you,

always the same, always fresh,

impregnated for eons to come

inside that smell of dry, old paper.

A very good poetry friend of mine Dr Amitabh Mitra was Indian by birth and now lives in South Africa. He is well known in both South African and Indian literary circles. Returning to his homeland this Christmas and New Year he was invited to be the Guest of Honor at the Sahitya Akademi, Delhi. The Akademi is an extremely important place in Indian Literary Circles and it was reported that there was a very large turn-out to hear Dr Mitra speak and to read his poetry.
